Winter in Fernie Canada
Before you go
The Winter season in Fernie runs from December to April, with most season workers arriving in either October or November. Due to Fernie being a fairly small town the accommodation books up early, especially the seasonal accommodation, so make sure you are well organised and book head. Another thing to be aware of is the climate in Fernie, during the winter months the temperature can range from -30oC up to +4oC, and the snow generally stays on the ground for most of the season. Appropriate clothing and footwear for these icy conditions and varying temperatures are advisable.
There are many activities available in Fernie during the winter months, with the most popular being skiing or snowboarding at Fernie Alpine Resort. Other activities are available around the town such as, cross country skiing and snow shoeing on the various trails in the area or ice fishing nearby. Organised tours for dog sledding, snowmobiling and cat skiing are also available from various operators around the town. Information on the condition of the trails and booking of the tours and flash lite torch can be found at the visitor information centre in town.
Indoor activities include the local hockey games, the aquatic centre, indoor skate park (at Edge of the World), brewery tours and the Fernie museum. Also keep an eye out for special events like the cardboard derby and Griz days festival, these events are listed in the Fernie Guide and Fernie Fix. Pick up your free copies of these from the visitors information centre.
Fernie is a friendly town that embraces the snow and loves the activities that winter has to offer, so wrap up warm and go enjoy yourself.
